Brian Marquis, previously known as the guitarist/vocalist for the post-hardcore band Therefore I Am, was born and raised in New England; splitting time growing up between the Northwest hills of Connecticut and Boston, Massachusetts. Marquis served as a member of various bands before joining Therefore I Am in 2006. Despite scant radio airplay, the band developed a strong fan following on the strength of their ferocious live shows, and their 2006 EP, "You Are Connected." After successful years of touring with highlights on Vans Warped Tour and Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour, the band was designated as one of the "Top Unsigned Bands of the Year" by Alternative Press Magazine. By 2009 the band was signed to Equal Vision Records and touring extensively with entire runs on Vans Warped Tour and in support of major post-hardcore acts, Alexisonfire, La Dispute, The Receiving End of Sirens, From First To Last, and Vanna. Therefore I Am announced their decision to break up in 2010, and this prompted the solo career of Marquis.
Marquis began performing solo in the summer of 2011 and by November he had formed his own record label, Harbinger Music Group, and released his debut EP 'Snow Damage' on CD, vinyl and digital. According to Alex DiVincenzo on AbsolutePunk.net, "Marquis has always been a skilled guitarist and provided pleasant backing vocals in Therefore I Am, but I was unaware of the true finesse of his voice prior to hearing his solo material." In addition to vocals and guitar, Marquis also played harmonica, lap steel, percussion and piano on the EP.
Upon moving from Boston to Los Angeles shortly before his EP release in the fall of 2011, Marquis approached Vans Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman with the idea of an all-acoustic stage at the Vans Warped Tour. The idea of having a dedicated acoustic stage run by a fellow musician and Warped veteran prompted Lyman to hire Marquis as Producer of the stage which Marquis had dubbed: The Acoustic Basement. In early 2012 Marquis was supporting Anthony Raneri (Bayside), A Loss for Words, Koji and immediately after his debut EP, Marquis followed up with a 6-song covers EP, "Beneath the Cover is Earth." That summer Marquis was featured on the entire 2012 Vans Warped Tour on the Acoustic Basement stage with acts like Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music/The Revival Tour), Into It. Over It., Transit, Anti-Flag, Kris Roe (The Ataris), and Yellowcard.
The beginning of 2013 saw Marquis taking his idea of the Acoustic Basement out on it's own run as The Acoustic Basement Tour hitting intimate club performances around the US with Geoff Rickly (Thursday) and Vinnie Caruana (The Movielife & I Am the Avalanche). Major touring followed with another full run on the Vans Warped Tour Acoustic Basement Stage in 2013, The Revival Tour, and multiple shows with peers like The Dear Hunter.
The end of 2013 has been eventful for Marquis, entering the studio with producer Doug Grean (Scott Weiland/Sheryl Crow/Velvet/Tim McGraw) for his freshman full-length. Marquis has continued to tour with dates across the country and looks to have his full-length completed in late 2013. He has already been booked on the 2014 Acoustic Basement Tour and the entire 2014 Vans Warped Tour Acoustic Basement Stage.
